Oman- Fanja crowned Super Cup champions

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Fanja was declared winner of the Super Cup- traditional curtain raiser of the domestic football season at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Friday after its opponent Al Arouba as expected failed to turn up for the match.

Defending Omantel Professional League (OPL) and His Majesty's Cup winner Al Arouba had pulled out of the match on Tuesday citing lack of payment from the Oman Football Association and late release of its players from national and army duty camps.

Despite the pullout the OFA competitions' committee had decided on Wednesday that the match would go ahead as per schedule and Fanja will be declared winner if Arouba does not turn up for the match.

The referee waited for the mandatory 15 Minutes after the 7.30pm kick off and then blew the whistle. Fanja was announced the winner and Ahmed Al Habsi senior OFA board member presented the trophy to Fanja.

A senior OFA official told Muscat Daily that it 'was a sham start to the season'. "We hoped for a good match between two top clubs and that did not happen. So it is certainly a disappointing start to the domestic season" he said.
