Qatar- QCS organises cancer awareness campaign

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) is running a summer cancer awareness and entertainment programme, with activities for children and visitors at shopping malls.

The five-day initiative at City Center Mall and Villaggio ends today.

It aims to educate children and visitors about dangers of cancer and the importance of a healthy diet in the prevention of the disease in addition to providing a summer festival with fun activities.

Activities at Villaggio included a booth to spread awareness about cancer in general and how to prevent it, and a children's corner with recreational programmes such as face-painting. Children were also able to take their pictures with the QCS promotional mascot and watched song performances.

The campaign at Villaggio concluded on Thursday with a concert and a magical show for visitors.

QCS then moved its programme to City Center Mall and is organising activities from 6pm until 10pm. The campaign there ends today.

QCS believes that awareness about cancer should be spread across communities.

Dr Pros Okasha, Head, Health Education Department, QCS, expressed happiness over visitor turnout. She said it showed QCS is now more comfortable to talk about cancer as it is no longer a scary disease.

"We are keen to educate young children about cancer and highlight that it can be treated if detected early.

"Early detection of cancer is possible only through regular checkups.

"Its prevention is not difficult as a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise can help significantly," she said.

Maryam Hamad Al Nuaimi, General Manager, QCS, stressed that QCS is keen to spread awareness about the disease among citizens and residents of all ages and segments.

"We believe that prevention is better than cure. We offer year-round awareness lectures and activities in schools, universities and institutions.

"Our lectures focus on proper food and prevention, breast self-examination, the importance of lifestyle in cancer prevention and the role of sport in strengthening the body to fight the disease," she said.
