Jordan- Prime minister meets with parliament's health committee

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Prime Minister, Abdullah Ensour, on Wednesday, joined a Lower House of Parliament's health committee meeting for a discussion on key health care issues and the mounting pressure on public hospitals and clinics.

Speaker of the Lower House, Atef Tarawneh, noted that the public healthcare sector remains the main provider of healthcare services in the Kingdom as it covers more than 60 per cent of citizens and that places massive pressure on this key sector.

Tarawneh also spoke about brain drain of medical cadres and specialist physicians to Arab Gulf countries seeking much better pays a fact that requires the government to look into measures needed to stop the departure of doctors most notably in specialties such as cardiology and neurology. He added the massive influx of Syrian refugees to the kingdom strained the public healthcare sector. The speaker demanded the government to include former and current members of the parliament to the government-sponsored healthcare system; a request the prime minister promised to consider and take a decision on soon.

The prime minster said his government has been working to offset the gap and shortage of doctors in some key medical specialties. Ensour affirmed that the government is open to suggestions and recommendations by lawmakers and even former health ministers to upgrade the national healthcare sector.
