Jordan- Foreign ministry succeeds in securing funds for UNRWA

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The ministry of foreign and expatriates affairs, on Wednesday, said it has succeeded in securing funds for the cash-strapped United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) that will enable it to continue its operations in Jordan and other host countries of Palestinian refugees.

The ministry said it exerted major efforts to secure funds for the UNRWA which has been experiencing deep financial crisis that risked closure of affiliated health facilities and delaying scholastic year. It added that the efforts came following direct orders by His Majesty King Abdullah II to the government to contact international community bodies and donor nations to provide funding for the UNRWA to make sure it continues to serve Palestinian refugees in Jordan and other host countries.

The Royal directives come within Jordan's efforts to support the Palestinian people to establish their independent and sovereign Palestinian state on pre-June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In this regard, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Affairs, Nasser Judeh, made extensive contacts with donor countries and sent letters to 49 foreign ministers, besides the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urging them to support the agency. He also met with a number of senior officials, including U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to discuss means to support UNRWA.
