Qatar meet Saudi Arabia in opener


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Hosts Qatar take on neighbouring Saudi Arabia in their first match of the GCC U-17 Cup that kicks off today.

In the first match of the event, Oman will play Kuwait while Qatar take on Saudi Arabia in the second match of opening day.

The first match starts at 4:00pm while the second clash kicks-off at 6:45pm.

After a day's rest, Saudi Arabia will tackle the UAE while Oman battle Bahrain on August 22.

On the third match day on August 24, Qatar play the UAE in their second clash of the tournament. The same day Kuwait play Bahrain.

The six teams are divided into two groups. Group A includes Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain.

In Group B, Qatar is tagged along with Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

The organising committee yesterday conducted the technical meetings involving officials of all the six participating teams.

The semi-finals of the nine-day event will be played on August 27.

The all-important title clash will take place on August 29.

Earlier, Qatar featured in a five-national football event in Mexico at the start of August in preparation for this tournament.

Meanwhile, Qatar's Olympic squad has arrived in Switzerland, QFA said yesterday.

Before arriving in Switzerland, Qatar squad camped in Austria for the first phase of their two-stop European tip.

Qatar's Europe-based players including captain Akram Afif will also feature in the on-going camp, QFA said.

Qatar is coached by Felix Sanchez who guided the team to the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup held in New Zealand in June this year.
