US Deplores Failure of Signing South Sudan Peace Agreement

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The United States welcomes the signing by the opposition and other stakeholders of the South Sudan peace agreement, National Security Adviser Susan Rice said late on Tuesday.
"However, we are deeply disappointed that the government of South Sudan under President Salva Kiir yet again squandered the opportunity to bring peace to their people by refusing to sign the agreement," Rice said in a statement released by the White House. "The US deplores this failure of leadership. "The United States has begun talks that could lead to sanctions against those who undermine the South Sudan peace process, she said.
The United States greatly appreciates the critical role that Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) leaders are playing in supporting the talks, she added.
Their persistence and united approach have brought the parties closer to an agreement that can lead them down the path to peace, Rice noted, adding that the United States will continue to support IGAD as it strives to secure the full and final agreement of the government of South Sudan within the agreed 15 days. She also called upon the government of South Sudan and Kiir to sign the agreement before IGAD's deadline without reservation or condition.
