Your prescription drugs could make your kids addicts

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)If you use a prescription drug for an illness do not give it to any of your family members a senior Dubai Police official has urged residents.

She highlighted a recent case the police received in which a girl was addicted to tramadol pills. Police investigation revealed that the girl's mother took tramadol as prescribed by a physician for an illness she had. The mother who was unaware of the addictive properties of the drug gave it to her children for minor ailments such as headaches. This way the whole family became addicted to tramadol.

The police officer First Corporal Suhair Ibrahim Al Mazmi from the Social Work Division of General Department of Anti-Narcotics said private clinics are also to blame for addicts getting easy access to tramadol. "The electronic system for dispensing controlled medicines which is being implemented by the Ministry of Health will help curb the illegal sale of controlled medicines."

Al Mazmi said the department has recorded many cases of spoilt children becoming drug addicts. "Parents of these children give them a lot of money and don't monitor them. They fall into bad company and become drug addicts."

On the other hand parents of reformed drug addicts should accept them and not keep reminding them of their past she said. "This is one of the major reasons for drug relapse."

Chances of drug relapse increase due to lack of parents' understanding she said. "In some cases parents of reformed drug addicts doubt their behaviour. Parents should understand that drug recovery can take a long time. Recovering addicts need all the support they can."
