Jordan- PM urges eased real estate registration procedures

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour Tuesday urged officials at land registration departments to cut red tape to ensure better service for both the public and investors and the safety of citizens' properties. Ensour surprised both staff and recipients of service as he paid an unscheduled visit to the North Amman Lands Registration Department to check first-hand on the quality of service rendered to people and investors.

The prime minister, accompanied by finance minister Umayya Touqan, was briefed about the volume of work at the department, which had witnessed an increase in the number of citizens seeking registration of real estate following the cabinet's latest exemptions of fees on residential apartments. Under a package of incentives, announced recently in the government's bid to spur the real estate market, homebuyers are exempted from registration fees for the first 150 square metres (sq.m.) of apartments sized 180sq.m. or less.

Ensour talked to homebuyers who aired their observations about the kind of service the department offers, and stressed the importance of easing registration regulations for investors.

Many of those present demanded that basic real estate prices specified by the Lands and Survey Department be observed "in order to achieve justice for all", and also urged authorities to cut the duration of 14 days a transaction currently needs to complete, through electronic linkage with other public entities.

At a meeting with the North Amman Land Registration Department Director Amer Ayasrah, Ensour stressed the importance of providing protection to people's properties "against any attempt at manipulation".

The prime minister referred to over 70 pieces of legislation related to the functions of the land and survey department, calling for unifying some of these and updating others, a matter, he said, that would help to improve the quality of service and simplify procedures.

Ayasrah assured that the Land and Survey Department and its directorates spread across the Kingdom had highly safe computer programmes and records "that no one can manipulate." However, he insisted on direct linkage with the Civil Status and Passports Department "to ensure no breaches might occur".
