Egypt- Arab League urges Arab military strategy for Libya

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The Arab League Tuesday called for a pan-Arab military strategy in Libya and reiterated its call for respecting the country's territorial unity and sovereignty and supporting the UN-sponsored political process in the country, according to a statement released today.

In the statement, issued after an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in the North African country, the Arab countries said they were relieved that UN-mediated peace talks had resumed in Geneva and appealed to all parties to the Libyan conflict to show flexibility, protect the country's higher interest and move speedily to form a national reconciliation government.

It stressed the urgency "in these difficult circumstances" of expediting the setting up of an Arab strategy to assist Libya militarily to counter the Daesh terrorism and stop the radical group's expansion across the country.

The statement urged the international community to support the Libyan government in facing Daesh's violations and massacres it had perpetrated against innocent people in the city of Sirte and also to draw up a comprehensive plan to fight terrorism in the Arab region.

Algeria had proposed to the meeting that military support for Libya be within the political context and the solution sought by the international community as the sole means to end the crisis through dialogue among Libyans and form a national unity government The meeting's chair, Jordan's ambassador to the league Bisher Khasawneh, told a press conference that the resolution was adopted unanimously by Arab delegates.

He said an Algerian comment about military intervention in Libya made after the final statement was passed, was not to express any reservations about the decision, but was "merely to explain Algiers's viewpoint towards the Libyan situation".
