Thousands of students across Oman will be heading back to classes from August 23 when the new academic year for public and private school begins.

Shops and supermarkets selling school supplies and uniforms have begun seeing increased footfall of parents and children.

This means good business for retailers and a costly shopping trip for parents. Looking at the high demand the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) has stepped in to check unreasonable hike in prices.

'The authority had started preparing for the back-to-school season in all governorates. We have set up teams to observe the market to ensure availability of supplies and also check unnecessary price rise' Hilal al Ismaili market observation manager PACP said.

He pointed out 'The authority keeps a watch on the quality of goods and their prices which have been standardised by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. If the standards are not met PACP will take necessary action against erring companies.' He said that traders have been warned against hiking prices.

'We also advise consumers to check the best offers before buying' he added. Talal al Mukhaini a parent said 'The back-to-school season is a big chance for traders to adjust the low sales period that sets in after schools close. Parents depend on PACP to check the market.'

Khalid al Riami another shopper said 'One can see the effort that PACP has put in to guarantee that all supplies are displayed well. This makes choosing easy. There are some promotions on too.'
