As many as seven consortiums comprising international engineering companies have submitted bids to build Oman's largest independent water project (IWP) which will be spread over two locations - in Sohar and Barka.

The Barka and Sohar IWP will have total combined production capacity of 530000m3 of water per day.

According to the Oman Power and Water Procurement Co (OPWP) the seven consortiums that have submitted bids are: Abengoa Water SL (with National Power and Water Co and Muscat Overseas LLC); GS Inima Environment SA (with GS Engineering and Construction Acciona Aqua SA and Oman Investment Corporation); Hyflux Ltd (on its own); Itochu Corporation (with Degremont International Power SA Dubai branch and WJ Towell and Co); JGC Corporation (with Sojit Corporation); Valoriza Agua SL (with Oman Brunei Investment Co and Sogex Oman); and Veolia Middle East (with Marubeni Corporation and Nippon Koei).

Earlier this year around 12 consortiums had evinced interest in the project when the prequalification tender was floated. In June OPWP selected eight consortiums for the main tender. The Abengoa GDF Suez (now Engie) Hyflux Valoriza and Veolia consortiums were qualified unconditionally while GS Inima Itochu and JGC Corporation were qualified conditionally.

'We are looking for around 250000m3 per day capacity in Sohar and around 280000m3 per day capacity in Barka. So the total capacity of this project will be nearly 530000m3' Eng Ahmed al Jahdhami CEO of OPWP had told Muscat Daily in February.

Jahdhami said that the contract is expected to be awarded in November this year and commercial operations at both sites will be targeted for 2018.

OPWP is developing water desalination projects in various locations in the sultanate in order to double capacity from the current 657000m3 per day to 1300000m3 by 2020 with estimated private-sector investment of around RO700mn.
