Qatar- Indian officials discuss workers' welfare with Labour Minister


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) A wide range of issues related to the well-being and welfare of Indian nationals in Qatar were discussed at the third meeting of the Joint Working Group on Labour and Manpower Development between India and Qatar in Doha on Monday.
The Qatari delegation at the meeting was led by Saleh Saied al-Shawi, director, Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. Mohanish Verma, protector-general of emigrants and joint secretary, Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, headed the four-member delegation from India.
Before the delegation-level talks, Indian ambassador Sanjiv Arora, accompanied by the delegation from India, called upon HE the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Abdullah Saleh Mubarak al-Khulaifi in the presence of the Qatari delegation.
The minister conveyed his government's "deep appreciation for the vital contribution of the large, accomplished and highly regarded Indian community to the progress of Qatar", the Indian embassy said in a statement. He also underlined the Qatar government's commitment to the ongoing process of labour reforms in Qatar.
The Indian side thanked HE the Minister and conveyed that the Indian government accorded the highest priority to the well-being and welfare of Indian nationals abroad, and highlighted major initiatives and steps in this regard. They thanked the Qatari authorities for their co-operation.
Further, the Indian delegates welcomed the process of labour reforms undertaken by the Qatar government. They also conveyed that the Indian government looked forward to the implementation of further measures being considered.
At the delegation-level talks of the Joint Working Group, the two sides had cordial and fruitful discussions on a wide range of issues related to the well-being and welfare of Indian nationals in Qatar, with a particular focus on Indian workers. The Indian delegation also discussed specific humanitarian cases, the statement noted.
Upon their arrival in Qatar on Sunday, the visiting delegation was briefed by the Indian ambassador and also had a meeting with the president and other office-bearers of the Indian Community Benevolent Forum, which functions under the aegis of the Indian embassy to help Indian workers.
Before leaving Doha, the Indian delegation would visit Labour City in the Industrial Area.
