(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)A mega UAE project which got underway in Jordan to improve living conditions of the Syrian refugees will be completed by year-end according to reports.
The Ministry of International Cooperation and Development (MICAD) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that work is in progress to establish a full-scale waste-water and drainage system for the displaced at the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan. The project the first of its kind in the camp aims at establishing a drainage system which can divert excess water for agricultural needs. "We have been in constant coordination with our partners both locally and internationally who are working tirelessly to alleviate the conditions of Syrian refugees and making a positive difference in their lives. Every effort counts and the UAE is proud to step up and play its role in helping others" said Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi the Minister of International Cooperation and Development. The first phase of this project will provide sewage collection for each refugee household in the camp. Each household will be connected to a pipe that carries sewage to a communal tank within the block areas. Phase 2 will include a network of pipes that will carry sewage from these communal tanks to the treatment plant. The UAE pledged Dh18 million in aid for the Zaatari camp refugees last year of which Dh7 million was allocated to health initiative and the rest for sanitation projects.
