Pandit Jasraj to perform in Dubai

Date:

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Classical music lovers in the UAE are in for a treat this September as eminent Hindustani vocalist Pandit Jasraj makes a comeback to Dubai for a live concert. Presented by entertainment company Tambourine Live, the two-hour concert promises to be the finest showcase of Panditji's Mewati tradition of singing.

Talking about the upcoming show, Vinod Raghavan, Director & CEO, Tambourine Live, said: "Pandit Jasraj is the doyen of India's famed Mewati gharana of Hindustani music. He has close to seven decades of performing to his credit and to this day his voice maintains its virtuosity and extraordinary range of three-and-a-half octaves! Very few Indian musicians have been so felicitated as Panditji and fewer still have been celebrated the way he has been both in India and abroad. He is a rare maestro who has managed to make classical music accessible to the masses."

Among the highlights of the concert will be semi-classical renditions of Haveli Sangeet - a near extinct devotional genre that is part of the rich historical traditions of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. In keeping with the spirit of this genre, the pakhawaj, a traditional percussive instrument, and the jhanjh, hand cymbals, have been added to the accompanying line-up of classical instruments.

The concert will also be a given a richer dimension with flute accompaniment by child prodigy and Grammy nominated flautist Shashank Subramanyam, a disciple of Pandit Jasraj.

"The concert will be a fine potpourri of Panditji's devotional all-time favourites including Govind Damodara Madhaveti and Om namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya along with other rare gems. His music has an appeal beyond language, culture and race. In that sense it is truly world music and he is a shining embodiment of his honorary title Sangeet Martand (The blazing sun of music)," enthused Vinod.

Led by Pandit Jasraj, the concert ensemble includes his illustrious disciples Rattan Mohan Sharma and Tripti Mukherjee on the vocals supported by musicians on the harmonium, tabla, pakhawaj, jhanjh and maestro Shashak Subramanyam on the flute.

He will be performing at Madinat Theatre - Souk Madinat Jumeirah on Friday, September 11 from 7pm onwards.
