New Egyptian law on countering terrorism to enter into force on August 17

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday signed an advanced law on countering terrorism, which will enter into force on August 17, Egyptian newspaper Al Shorouk reported.

The newspaper reported, referring to the official presidential administration spokesperson, that the full text of the law will be published in the Official Gazette on Monday, thus entering into force.

According to experts quoted by the newspaper, such law should enter into force as soon as possible, given the situation in the country and the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

In early July, the government of Egypt approved an expanded draft of the law on combating terrorism, which was earlier prepared by the Ministry of Justice. The new law is intended to toughen the punishment for various crimes related to terrorism. The law clearly defines the concept of terrorism, terrorist crimes, terrorist groups and criminals, and contains a precise list of penalties for offenses related to terrorism.

The need to combat terrorism in Egypt after the series of recent terrorist attacks on the Egyptian territory, which included foreign citizens, accelerates the adoption of the enhanced law.

On June 10, a suicide blast in the courtyard of a temple in the southern Egyptian city of Luxor has left dozens of people, including foreign tourists, wounded. The Islamic State (ISIL) militant group claimed responsibility for the attack. Following the attack, Egyptian President al-Sisi announced an expanded security presence in places of high public concentration.

Jihadist militants have killed hundreds of security employees and servicemen in Egypt since the 2013 coup deposed the country's then-President Mohamed Morsi.
