Qatar- Clinical Information System implemented at Cuban Hospital

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has announced successful implementation of new Clinical Information System (CIS) at The Cuban Hospital.

The hospital has replaced paper patient clinical records system with a the integrated electronic one as part of a phased roll- out across HMC and Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC).

Once the roll-out is complete, patient records will be stored and accessible electronically across both organisations. The hospital is the sixth HMC facility to implement CIS, a comprehensive system-wide change designed in collaboration with clinicians to ensure patients receive the safest and most effective clinical care.

The end result will be that patients will not need to explain their medical history more than once when they visit a public healthcare provider because clinicians will have access to a single electronic health record for all patients, at their fingertips.

This will include the patient's healthcare history, medication list, clinical notes and other information. It will free up healthcare professionals to focus more on clinical support and will change the way staff work across HMC and PHCC. At the hospital, the system is being bedded in and staff are recording patients' details on CIS as and when presented at hospitals. As a result, appointments may take a little longer than usual.

Philip Lowen, CEO of the hospital, said his team had put processes in place to ensure as smooth a patient experience as possible and thanked patients for patience during the transition period.

"I want to reassure the public that all patients are being seen within a clinically appropriate time-frame during this time of transition. Implementation of the system will help us in our aim to provide the safest, most effective and most compassionate care.

"It will ensure patient records are secure and up-to-date and reduce the need for paper in the clinical environment. CIS implementation is one of the key programmes for the hospital and I am grateful for patience and support shown to us so far by our patients and to the team which has worked on implementation for dedication and commitment."

The importance of an electronic medical records system was set out in National Health Strategy for Qatar, launched in 2011.
