Kuwait Approves KD 3 Billion Infrastructure Projects

(MENAFN- Arab Times) Preparatory works of partnership projects between public and private sectors have borne fruit, thanks to the legislative and executive authorities that enacted a law to set up a body to run these projects, said a minister. The body formed its structure in accordance with the international standards to help Kuwait implement projects in a competitive and professional manner, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Ansa Al-Saleh said in a press statement Saturday.

The body's higher committee approved six projects worth three billion Kuwaiti dinars and their tenders were offered at the beginning of this month, he added. Among the projects are the second phase of Al- Zour North plant for producing electricity and water, Al-Khiran power plant, waste treatment at Kabd, sewage plant and Al-Abdaliya solar thermal power plant, he stated. The Al-Zour North plant aims to produce 1,800 megawatt of electricity and 102 million imperial gallons, he noted, adding Al- Khiran plant, south of Al-Zour, plans to produce 1,500 megawatt of electricity.

Al-Khiran project also includes a seawater desalination plant with a capacity of 125 MIGPD, he made clear. The sewage project aims to set up a new plant with a capacity of 500,000 cubic meters and could be expanded up to 700,000 cubic meters by 2020, he said. As for the Kabd project for solid waste treatment, the minister said it is a scheme that will be carried out in accordance with the latest technologies in this regard, with the aim of preserving environment, and its natural resources and producing alternative sources of energy to benefit various bodies of the State.

Concerning Al-Abdaliya solar thermal power plant, he said that it is expected to produce 280 megawatt of electricity, adding it has many benefits for environment as it limits the emission of carbon dioxide to 48,000 tons. He affirmed that these projects will be co-implemented by both public and private sectors as the State of Kuwait seeks to boost the participation of the private sector in sustainable development. The State also plans to create a quantum leap in terms of technologies used in these projects and services provided to citizens, transfer knowledge, create jobs for nationals, attract investment opportunities in the country and support local economy to alleviate burdens on the budget, he noted. This move will be in favor of the local economy, he expected.
