UAE- India to shelve eMigrate system?

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)Indian missions in the UAE have requested that their government suspend a new online recruitment system after glitches in the system jeopardised the placement of thousands of blue-collar workers to the UAE and other GCC countries.

As first reported by Khaleej Times the eMigrate system which was launched to smoothen and streamline the recruitment of Indian workers backfired with technical glitches resulting in a major crisis in the recruitment of Indian workers.

After a meeting with the human resources heads of major companies in the UAE last week the Indian Consulate in Dubai has written to the Indian government requesting the suspension of the system until at least the end of December sources said.

Officials from the Indian embassy and consulate in Abu Dhabi expect that the government will pay heed to their recommendation and will act accordingly. It is also expected that the government will fix the glitches in the software by then.

Its a major crisis that has hit the UAE labour market like in other GCC countries an official who did not want to be named said. Only a few companies in the region have been able to make group recruitment of Indian workers since the launch of the system. Not a single Indian worker has landed in the UAE through direct individual recruitment from companies.

The Indian Ambassador to the UAE T.P. Seetharam acknowledged that the missions have given their recommendations to the government. However he refused to divulge details.

Registering through the website of the new system www.emigrate.gov.in and getting different levels of approvals from the Indian missions and other authorities are mandatory for recruiting workers requiring emigration clearance from India.

Around 45 per cent of the over two million Indians working in the UAE falls under this category. About 3000 such workers are recruited monthly to work in the UAE. Indian workers in the UAE send home most of their earnings. In 2014 individual remittances from the UAE to India the largest receiver of remittances in the world rose to between $12 billion and $15 billion.

Apparently not a single company in the UAE has been successful in directly recruiting Indian blue-collar workers since the launch of the e-migrate system.

Sources told this newspaper that about 5000 employment visas are going to expire this month bringing recruitment of individual workers from India to a standstill.

If the situation continues another source said there will be no market for Indian workers in the UAE.

Big and small companies have lost several thousands of dirhams after thousands of employment visas expired. Some companies will have to bear the losses of 40 and 100 visas that expired as workers could not be brought on time.

Sources said many companies have already decided to look for workers from other countries. Others are pinning their hopes on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi now. They hope that the PM will take a favourable decision during his visit to the UAE.
