Iraqi PM fires cabinet's senior officials

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi on Wednesday gave the axe to the cabinet's Secretary General Hamed Khalaf and his two deputies.
The move is a part of the Premier's broader reform drive to rationalize the government spending and to fight corruption in state bodies, Al-Badi Office said in a press statement.
The sacking of the senior cabinet's officials came only one day after the parliament's unanimous approval a draft political reforms plan presented by Al-Abadi and the dismissal of vice presidents and deputies of the prime minister including former vice-president and former controversial premier Nouri Al-Maliki.
The reforms also included the formation of a commission to investigate corruption claims against incumbent and former politicians.
In this regard, the Iraqi higher judicial authority announced Wednesday that investigation bodies are probing corruption cases against 66 senior officials including current and former ministers, deputy ministers, undersecretaries, high-ranking police and army officers, and lawmakers.
