Jordan- PM: Syrian crisis can only be solved through political solution

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said the raging crisis in Syrian can only be resolved through a political solution and denied that Jordan has ambitions to expand into Syria.

Ensour added that Jordan doesn't interfere in other countries nor the Kingdom has ever acted as a launch-pad for operations against its neighbors, saying: "We don't have organizations or agents or spies in Syria...we are interested in seeing a stable and secure Syria." "We have never extended our hands to any organization and we don't have the money to fund any, but others, they have the funds, organizations and a number of players", the prime minister said in a press conference with his Lebanese counterpart, Tamam Salam, following a meeting for the joint Jordanian-Lebanese higher committee.

Ensour also said:" "Our borders with Syria span along about 380km and there are dozens of warring parties and we intervene when we have to provide opinion and safe support and not for bloody intervention." The prime minister pointed out that the 5-year-old crisis in Syria continues to leave a major impact and economic cost on Jordan because it forced land routes to a complete closure and forced airlines company to search for detours.

Furthermore, Ensour added, the crisis sent about 1.4 million Syrian refugees to Jordan to join another 2 million Syrian refugees, 500,000 Iraqis in addition to tens of thousands of Yemenis and Libyans.

Speaking on the financial crisis of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Ensour said the crisis is not about in providing foodstuffs, healthcare and education services but about the international community's recognition of the Palestinian refugees who were refused from their land and homes decades ago.

The Lebanese prime minister voiced hope that Jordan and Lebanon overcome the ramifications of the Syrian crisis which continues to pressure the two countries. He added that his country seeks to find a closure to the tragic situation in Syria and hopes that regional and foreign powers refrain from further escalating the crisis.

Salam thanked Jordan's support to Lebanon and the assistance the Jordanian army extends to the Lebanese army and security agencies. He spoke about counterterror efforts and emphasized the need to dry all up all sources of from which terrorism receives funding.
