Abu Dhabi Saracens set for Asia Rugby

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)Abu Dhabi Saracens will contest the inaugural Asia Rugby Western Clubs Champions League against three other title-winning teams from Kazakhstan Qatar and Sri Lanka next month.

In an initiative being billed as "an exciting new development for the men's XVs club game in the region" the four teams will play against each other in a round-robin format to determine the "Champion Rugby Club in Western Asia."

Four of the six games will be staged in the UAE (Three in Dubai and one in Abu Dhabi) with the other two in the Qatari capital.

"Asia Rugby sees this new annual competition as the bridge between senior domestic and international representative rugby and hopes that it will provide further incentive for all clubs in the region" said a "delighted" Asia Rugby President Trevor Gregory.

"Asia Rugby also hopes that this will provide a new opportunity for clubs to further engage in new players supporters volunteers and sponsors as well as providing new opportunities for Asia's match officials."

Gregory spoke of his 'extreme gratitude' to the four clubs for their commitment to this concept especially financially and pledged to eventually expand the project to incorporate the whole continent in due course. "Over the coming years Asia Rugby hopes to develop this competition further to embrace more clubs and be replicated by an equivalent competition in the eastern half of Asia" Gregory added.

"We can then ultimately have a play-off between the western and eastern winners for the right to call themselves Asia Rugby Club Champion (outside of the Japan Top League)."
