Seven suspected PKK militants killed in eastern Turkey

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) At least seven suspected militants of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, have been killed in Turkey's eastern Agri province, the governor's office has said Tuesday.

In an anti-terror operation near Tendurek Mountain in Agri, "seven terrorists were rendered inactive," the governor's office said in a statement.

The mountains of Agri and Tendurek were declared a "military security zones" for 15 days "because of terror acts", the Agri governor's office announced on Aug. 2.

Several areas in eastern and southeastern Turkey have been declared temporary "military security zones" as tension in the region has risen following the July 20 deadly suicide bombing in southeastern Suruc district that killed 32 people. There has since been a surge in attacks targeting security officers.

On Monday, contact was lost with seven customhouse guards working at the Uzumlu border gate in Cukurca district of the southeastern Hakkari province.

They had left Yuksekova district for Cukurca but they did not arrive at the border gate as planned.

Turkish jets have been carrying out airstrikes on suspected PKK targets in northern Iraq, while police have been conducting anti-terror raids across the country to apprehend suspected militants of the PKK, Daesh, and the far-left Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front, or DHKP-C - all three are designated terrorist organizations in Turkey.

Since July 24, around 1,600 people have been arrested in the wave of counter-terrorism raids.
