Israel responsible for violations against holy sites, Jordan warns

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Jordan held Israel, as the occupation power, responsible for any violations against the Al Aqsa Mosque and pledged to continue its role as custodian of Jerusalem's holy sites.

"Any attempt by Israelis to storm the Haram Al Sharif, enter the compound or carry out excavations there is an illegitimate and hostile act against the sacred Islamic site and the sentiments of all Muslims", State Minister for Media Affairs and official government spokesman Mohammad Momani said.

Momani said Jordan is exerting all in its power to maintain Islamic shrines, referring to the Hashemite custody of the Jerusalem holy places, a role underlined by an agreement signed by His Majesty King Abdullah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2013.

"Jordan's commitment in this regard is a declared sacred obligation that is not subject to any understandings with any party when the matter concerns undermining holy shrines or any attempt to desecrate or harm them in any form whatsoever", added Momani.

He said the Al Aqsa guards were fully performing their duty of preventing repeated raids of the mosque's grounds by Israelis, adding that the Jordanian government is seeking to increase their number and enable them to carry out "their noble mission".
