US lauds Iraq political reform efforts

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Following Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi's decision to cut senior government posts, including that of his deputy, the US has lauded his efforts at reforming his government.
"We certainly applaud the unity that was shown by Iraqi leaders from across the political spectrum... Abadi's proposals were aimed at streamlining the government and addressing corruption," State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner told reporters.
"And we note that these measures were unanimously approved by the Council of Ministers earlier today," he added.
"So we certainly commend Prime Minister Abadi's initiative to promote improved transparency and government services. And this is certainly something he pledged when he came into power to govern more inclusively, so we certainly believe that he's doing so through these measures that were adopted, and expect he'll continue to do so," Toner affirmed.
