ISIL frees 22 Syrian Assyrians

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has released 22 Christian Assyrians who were kidnapped along with 198 others in Tal Tamr town, Al-Hassakeh governorate, northeast Syria, on February 23.
The former hostages include 14 elderly women, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported late Tuesday.
The release came as a result of successful mediation by Syrian tribal headmen in exchange for ransom while the local patriarchate abstained from commenting on reports in this regard, SOHR said, citing local sources.
The mediators are negotiating with the patriarchate and ISIL for the release of more Assyrian hostages from Syria and other countries in the region, the sources added.
