QRC provides tips, hygiene kits for 1,000 expat workers

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has continued to implement the first phase of its National Communicable Disease Prevention Campaign (Weqaya), funded and sponsored by Supreme Council of Health (SCH).

Weqaya continues after its recent extension to target additional 5,000 expatriate workers.

During Eid, a QRC medical team organised a health education and psychological support festival for visitors to workers' health centres managed and operated by QRC with funding from and under the supervision of SCH.

The event involved informative and training sessions on the basics of personal hygiene and infection prevention for 1,000 expatriates visiting the centres in Industrial Area, Al Mamoura, Freej Abdelaziz, and Zekreet.

They received information about the importance of applying health and personal hygiene standards, common communicable diseases and how to avoid them, advice on protection of health against workplace risks, such as sun strokes and heat exhaustion, and how to administer first aid on colleagues who suffer such emergencies.

The lecture was delivered in various languages to ensure workers fully understand information and guidance, which will reflect positively on their behaviour.

Workers also received 1,000 hygiene kits, including tooth brush, soap and other items, and were trained in how to best use them.

They pledged to always use the acquired knowledge in their daily lives.

Launched in August 2013 by QRC and SCH, three-year Weqaya aims mainly to improve expatriate workers' health and safety through educational lectures, awareness fliers and personal hygiene kits.

Phase One was a success, with lectures, workshops and awareness courses for 10,000 workers from 40 companies and 21,000 visitors to the centres.

The campaign distributed 5,000 kits, with training in their use and 10,000 brochures and fliers on the most prevalent infections and health problems, such as corona virus, Ebola virus, influenza, tuberculosis and heat exhaustion.

The programme is inspired by QRC's commitment to social development and health promotion in society.

With lower disease rates particularly among workers, there will be less pressure on healthcare services, fewer sick leave, shorter absenteeism and higher productivity, contributing to the economic and social development strategy under Qatar National Vision 2030.
