Qatar- More overbridges to enhance pedestrian safety

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Department of Traffic has plans to build 242 foot overbridges, underpasses and zebra crossings with lights on arterial roads for pedestrians in different parts of the country. The move is aimed at reducing pedestrian accidents.

The pedestrian facilities are to be built over the next five years.

Zebra crossings with flash lights will be built at all intersections. Two major roads (Thani bin Jassim and Jazeera Al Arabia) already have them. Several zebra crossings are being built near the City Centre. The traffic department is coordinating with Ashghal, the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, Hamad Medical Corporation and Qatar University as well as the National Committee for Road Safety to complete the above projects.

Nearly 30 percent of deaths and serious injuries in road accidents are caused due to pedestrian run-over incidents.

Foot overbridges are planned on various thoroughfares, including Al Rayyan Road, Al Shamal Road, West of Ramada traffic lights in Doha, Salwa Road, near the Central Markets, and on the Corniche in Doha.

A foot overbridge is coming up in Industrial Area.

Underpasses will be built at all upcoming railway stations, including Gold, Red and Green Lines.

A pedestrian safety committee was set up by the traffic department headed by its Director, Brigadier Mohamed Saad Al Kharji.

It has identified vulnerable spots and recommended building foot over-bridges, underpasses and zebra-crossings with flashing lights in different places to ensure pedestrians' safety.

Lieutenant Mohamed Khalifa Al Muhaiza, head of traffic planning at the traffic department, told Al Sharq that Article 61 of the Traffic Law bars people from crossing a road from spots where crossing signs are not there and hence zebra crossings are being made on different roads.
