(MENAFN- Arab News) JEDDAH: Employees working in the private sector have appealed to the authorities concerned mainly the Ministry of Labor to declare the polling day as an official holiday in the Kingdom.
The municipal council elections will be held between 8 a.m and 5 p.m on Dec. 12. It will be for the first time in the history of the Kingdom where women will contest and vote in the elections.
A number of citizens were quoted by local media as saying on Tuesday that an official holiday for Saudi employees on polling day will allow a large number of voters to exercise their franchise.
They said the competent bodies can link the day off with the polling process through an official document to prove their participation in the elections.
Abdullah Al-Qahtan an employee in the private sector said if he working on the polling day will make it very difficult for him to go and cast the ballot.
'Many employees in the private sector are like me work outside the boundaries of their cities and governorates and will not be able to come to the polling center on the election day. Every voter should be granted a day off or some hours of relief from work' he added.
The rules regulations stipulate that the polling process be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. but the voters who are already inside the polling centers will be given an extended time to cast the vote.
