German, Saudi FMs discuss Iran's nuclear deal, Syrian crisis

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Visiting Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir discussed Monday with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier a number of dossiers, mainly the impact of the nuclear deal on the region.
The two sides also focused on the conflict in Syria as well as bilateral relations between Riyadh and Berlin.
In a joint press conference with al-Jubeir, Steinmeier said that he understood the concern of GCC and Arab countries over the nuclear agreement that was reached between Iran and the six world powers (the US, Russia, China, Britain and France, plus Germany) in Vienna on July 14.
The deal limits Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for lifting the international sanctions imposed on the country.
Steinmeier said that he understood the concern of GCC and Arab countries in this regard, hoping that the deal would contribute to maintaining stability and security of the region, opening new diplomatic doors and solving the crises.
He also hoped that the US Congress would approve the deal so as to implement what has been reached with the Iranians.
As for the conflict in Syria, he expressed his hope that the deal would contribute to reaching a political solution for the crisis.
The German official welcomed US-Russian efforts aiming to reach a consensus at the UN Security Council regarding the Syrian crisis.
On his part, al-Jubeir said that Iran should be committed to the terms of the deal, calling on it to change its foreign policy, stop the enrichment of uranium and put its nuclear facilities under the international supervision to avoid the possession of nuclear weapons.
When asked about political relations with Tehran, al-Jubeir said Saudi Arabia seeks good relations with Iran but this depends on the Iranian government, urging it to change its policy.
Al-Jubeir, meanwhile, underlined the importance of finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis based on the Geneva I document.
"Bashar Al-Assad has no future in Syria. He should step down as soon as possible in order to solve the crisis quickly," he said.
