Security developments take critical carve in Turkey

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Security developments in Turkey seem to be taking a grave turn on Monday as attacks targeted the US consulate and a police station in Istanbul, as Ankara is escalating its military campaign against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
In the meantime, two municipalities in Sernak, southeastern Turkey, were today the target of attacks that left five security personnel killed.
Early today, two gunmen attacked the US consulate building in Istanbul, but no casualties were reported. One assailant was wounded and detained, and a rifle and other weaponry were seized, Istanbul's governor said in a statement.
Responsibility for the consulate attack was claimed by the far-left Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C).
In a statement posted on its website, the DHKP-C vowed to continue to launch more attacks against "imperialism", until the country is liberated from US bases.
Also in Istanbul today, gunmen attacked a police station in the district of Sultanbeyli, injuring 10 people, among them three policemen.
In Sernak near the Iraqi borders, four Turkish policemen died and a fifth was wounded in a mine explosion.
It was reported that PKK's gunmen set off the mine while a police patrol was passing in the town of Silopi, adding that security forces carried out a wide-scale operation to find the culprits.
Also a Turkish soldier was killed when PKK members attacked military helicopters carrying troops in another part of Sernak.
Immediately after the attacks, the Turkish security forces launched a wide-scale operation against PKK posts.
Today's bloody attacks follow an explosion in Suruc, close to the borders with Syria, where 32 people were killed last month. Security forces then launched a campaign saw the detention of up to 1,600 suspected militants of the PKK and the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
