Twin blasts kill 35 Iraqis, injure 65 others
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Over 35 people have been killed and 65 others injured when two vehicles laden with explosives detonated in the towns of Hwaider and Kanan in Diyala Province, east of the capital, Baghdad on Monday.
A security source told KUNA that a booby-trapped car, driven by a suicide bomber exploded at a market in the town of Hwaider, killing at least 25 people and injuring around 50 others. The explosion destroyed adjacent shops, including a coffee shop crowded with customers, the source added.
The injured have been rushed to a medical facility for treatment, the source said.
In a separate incident, in the town of Kanan, 10 people were killed and 15 others injured when a road-side vehicle packed with explosives, exploded at the entrance of a market.
The twin blasts were highly reminiscent of the July 17 Khan Bani Saad massacre, where a suicide car bomb killed tens of civilians.
Diyala's local government had asked Baghdad to increase security presence in the province, which witnessed fierce battles between Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) fighters and the Iraqi military.
