Over 20 militants killed in ISIL assault on military airbase in Syria

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The Islamic State (ISIL) jihadist group failed in an attempt to occupy the Kweiris military airbase in the Syrian northern province of Aleppo, leaving 26 militants dead, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said.

The attack took place on Sunday, according to SOHR. The jihadist group blew up three vehicles targeting airport walls, before the Syrian army repelled the assault.

The offensive killed 12 Syrian soldiers, the watchdog reported on Sunday.

Syria has been in a state of a civil war since 2011. Government forces have been fighting numerous extremist groups, including ISIL.

ISIL is a fundamentalist extremist group, notorious for their multiple human rights atrocities, primarily operating in Iraq and Syria, where it has captured large territories in 2014.
