US- Security Council condemns "terrorist" attacks in Afghanistan, Bangui


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the series of terrorist attacks in Kabul - at least two of them claimed by the Taliban, and which resulted in hundreds of casualties and at least 70 deaths, including children. In a press statement, the UNSC expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims of these heinous acts and to the Government of Afghanistan. The members of the Council also wished the injured speedy recovery and underlined the need to bring the perpetrators of these deplorable acts to justice.
They reaffirmed need to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.
Therefore, they reminded States that "they must ensure that measures taken to combat terrorism comply with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law." Nevertheless, the Council led by Nigeria this month, reiterated that no violent or terrorist acts can reverse the path towards Afghan-led peace, democracy and stability in Afghanistan, which is supported by the people and the Government of Afghanistan and by the international community.
On a separate statement, the members of the Council expressed their sorrow at the tragic incident in Bangui that resulted in the death of five Rwandan peacekeepers serving in the MINUSCA, and the wounding of 8 others.
The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the 5 peacekeepers killed and to the Government of Rwanda, and to MINUSCA, wishing a speedy recovery to those injured, the statement added.
The members of the security council took note of the investigation into the circumstances of this tragic incident, which is ongoing.
With such events, the Council members reiterated their full support for MINUSCA to assist the Transitional Authorities, which bear the primary responsibility to protect the population, and the people of the Central African Republic in their efforts to bring lasting peace and stability to their country, as mandated by the Security Council in resolution 2217.
