Typhoon Soudelor kills 17 in E China


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The death toll from typhoon Soudelor rose to 17 and with another five missing in east China's Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Monday.
Among them 14 were killed after being either washed away by flash floods or buried in house collapse or landslides in Zhejiang Province, the provincial flood control authorities said.
The typhoon, the 13th in China this year, brought heavy downpours to the affected regions where precipitation in some areas reached 700 mm over the past two and a half days, a record in up to 120 years.
By Sunday, the typhoon has affected about 2.9 million people in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces. After pounding Taiwan and leaving six people dead, four missing and 102 injured, Soudelor landed in Fujian Province on Saturday and moved from there to neighboring provinces. Three airports in Fujian were closed, with more than 530 flights canceled. Six expressways were closed, and 191 high-speed trains were canceled. Meanwhile, in Zhejiang, it inflicted a direct economic loss of CNY 4 billion (USD 644 million).
