Jordan- EMPHNET commences IHR toolkit for epidemiologists workshop

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET), in collaboration with the Biosecurity Engagement Program (BEP), commenced a five-day workshop titled "IHR Toolkit for Epidemiologists" on August 9th, 2015.

The event brings together Field Epidemiology Training Program residents, graduates, and specialists in the field of animal and human health epidemiology from four countries namely Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, and Morocco.

The goal of this training is to harmonize the understanding of International Health Regulations (IHR) and practices of current and future epidemiologists in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR).

More specifically, the course will train human and animal health epidemiologists in techniques for the design and implementation of disease detection and investigation programs. It will serve to improve communication networks between target countries, while improving case detection and response to outbreaks.

The workshop opening session was attended by the Jordan Ministry of Health's Primary Health Care Administrative Director, Dr. Bashir Al Qasir, and EMPHNET's Executive Director Dr. Mohannad Al-Nsour.

Commenting on the workshop, Dr. Mohannad Al-Nsour said that creating a clear understanding of International Health Regulations is crucial for maintaining health security in the eastern Mediterranean (EMR) region.

"This will create a unified understanding amongst current and aspiring field epidemiologists, which is a goal that will improve regional capacities in areas of disease detection and investigation program design. These skills are of great importance to this region, as the Eastern Mediterranean Region is characterized by constant change in public health needs and demands, " he further added.

It is worth noting that the IHR Toolkit for Epidemiologists Training is an EMPHNET initiative, established in 2013. This training course aims to reinforce capacities of FETP trainees in the EMR to effectively contribute to IHR implementation of their countries. It is important to introduce IHR concepts to epidemiologists who will access high positions in Ministries of Health within their respected countries.
