Saudi- OIC To Tackle Terrorism, Islamophobia In Meeting


(MENAFN- Arab Times) The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is to hold on Tuesday, a high level meeting to further strengthen, solidify and coordinate the efforts of its various institutions in countering extreme violence, sectarianism, terrorism and Islamophobia. In a statement, the OIC said it has been committed to countering violent extremism for over 20 years.

The OIC Code of Conduct on Combating Terrorism and the OIC Convention on Combating International Terrorism were adopted in 1994 and 1999 respectively. OIC's commitment has also been expressed in various resolutions adopted by Summits and Council of Foreign Ministers meetings.

Most recently in Kuwait and Jeddah, where brainstorming sessions were also held at a ministerial level as part of the foreign ministers meetings held there in 2014 and 2015. Tuesday's meeting will be attended by the heads of OICs relevant subsidiary, specialized and affiliated organs. OIC Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani is scheduled to deliver a speech at the meeting, along with statements by the heads of the OICs various institutions in relation to their activities in this regard.

The meeting is expected to focus on the multitude and various dimensions of OIC's strategy including the root causes of terrorism and violent extremism; how to delegitimize the ideological discourse of terrorist organizations; and ways of inspiring young Muslims to become the driving force against terrorism; cyber and social media.
