Jordanian company wins Austrian Energy Globe Award


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The Jordanian Millennium Energy Industries (MEI), a regional leader in integrated solar solutions, received the Energy Global Award for the second time for a project on installing a 0,5 MW pilot solar plant in the world oldest copper mine in Cyprus .

The Award honored MEI and its efforts to provide sustainable and resource saving projects from emission-free sources in the region and internationally.

The project aims to heat a chemical solution used to separate the copper from ore. This pilot project is a major breakthrough as it is the first time that this type of technology is used in mining, a statement by the company said Sunday.

The new system saves an equivalent of 138,000 liters of diesel per year which is 367 tons of CO2 . Over the system's lifetime of 25 years, this amounts to 6,517 tons of CO2, the statement added.

The system also increases the yield of copper by 7% and shortens the time needed for the process by 70%. Economically speaking, the mining company has savings of approximately 150,000 Euros a year due to this new system, MEI statement explained.

The Austrian Commercial Counselor, Isabel Schmiedbauer handed over the award to the company's General Manager, Hisham Mikhi.

Founded in 2002 with aim of serving the solar energy needs of the region utilizing best technology for solar thermal and power, MEI is an international -regional company, based in Amman and operates in the Arab MENA region, with over 200 reference solar energy projects in more than ten countries.

The Energy Globe Award was founded in 1999 by the Austrian energy pioneer Wolfgang Neumann and is one of today's most prestigious environmental awards.

The aim of the award is to raise global attention on sustainable, applicable environmental solutions and to motivate people to become active in this area.
