US- Ban sad at UN peacekeepers' deaths


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed his sadness learning the death of five Rwandan peacekeepers serving in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA). Ban's press office released Saturday evening a statement confirming that a full investigation into the circumstances of this incident in which eight additional peacekeepers were wounded is ongoing.
The UN Chief offers his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and to the Government and people of Rwanda, and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured, the statement added.
In Centeral African Republic, a Rwandan UN peacekeeper shot four of his colleagues and wounded eight others, before he was killed.
On a separate incident, Ban also condemned the attacks in Sevare, Mali, which led to the death of at least one United Nations contractor. A number of soldiers from the Malian Armed Forces have also reportedly been killed and wounded in the incident which remains ongoing, the statement confirmed. "This attack will not lessen the determination of the United Nations to accompany the Malian people in their efforts to implement the peace agreement," Ban added.
Nevertheless, the UN Chief called upon the people of Mali and the parties to the agreement to remain united in their pursuit of a just and sustainable peace.
