UAE- Kerry needs to assuage GCC concerns over Iran: paper

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) The English-language daily newspaper Gulf News, said that the US Secretary of State John Kerry has gone out of his way to reassure the GCC states that the US continues to support their efforts against destabilisation in the region.

In an editorial published today, the paper said, "In a rare meeting with the foreign ministers of the six GCC states, Kerry made an obvious criticism of Iran when he stated that the US is helping the GCC states "counter-destabilising activities taking place in the region.""

Kerry met the GCC ministers this week in Doha in the first follow up to the May summit that US President Barack Obama hosted for the Gulf states at Camp David. "The Americans are still struggling to ease Arab concerns over the ending of sanctions against Iran, as malignant Iranian support for destabilisation in the region remains active. Tehran's activities in Yemen, Bahrain, Iraq and Syria, are all elements in a potent mix of political destabilisation and Iranian support for sectarian agenda and violence. This is a major concern for all Arab states and is something that the Americans need to work with the GCC and find ways to stop it," said Gulf News.

The paper continued, "Kerry also took time to visit Egypt for the first bilateral strategic dialogue in six years. Cooperation had been suspended during the chaos of the revolutions and Mohammad Mursi government, but the US is willing to work with the government of President Abdul Fattah Al Sissi, and Kerry commented that US-Egyptian relations were returning to a "stronger base". Egypt and the GCC are working in close alliance to restore effective national government in the troubled Middle East where a dangerous number of nation states have collapsed and fallen into anarchy and civil war."

The editorial concluded by saying that Kerry's visit to the region has been matched by one from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who showed that both powers are seeking to work in constructive coordination rather than indulge in regional rivalry.
