Turkey: Terms of top military brass set to end on Aug 5


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The tenures of Turkey's top military officials, including its army, air force and naval chiefs are set to end on August 5 at the end of a three-day long Supreme Military Council meeting.

The council, convened under Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, began its first meeting at 11.45 a.m. (0945GMT) at the headquarters of General Staff in the capital Ankara on Monday. It will discuss promotions, tenure extensions and retirements of Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) staff, the military said in a statement.

Chief of General Staff Necdet Ozel, Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul, Commander of Land Forces Hulusi Akar, Sea Forces Commander Bulent Bostanoglu, Air Forces Commander Akin Ozturk, Gendarme General Commander Abdullah Atay as well as several other senior commanders were present in Monday's meeting.

At the end of the council meeting on August 5, tenures of Ozel, Bostanoglu, Ozturk and Atay are all expected to come to an end, the statement added.

Exclusion of army personnel due to indiscipline and amoral conditions was another issue to be taken up at the council meeting, known also as YAS in Turkish, the statement added.

Decisions taken at the council will be announced after they are approved by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
