Where were you on the blue moon night?

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)If in the Friday bustle you missedlast night's blue moon don't worry. It won't be all that long before it returns. And the colour had nothing to do with the frequency of the moon's special status. The truth is blue moons are somewhat rare but they are rarely blue.

A blue moon is simply a second full moon in one calendar month. We last saw a full moon on July 2 and the second one on Friday night July 31.

But for a truly blue-coloured moon to occur Nasa says there would need to be a volcanic eruption. As it did back in 1883 when people saw blue moons almost every night after the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa exploded with a force of a 100 megaton nuclear bomb. Plumes of ash rose to the very top of Earth's atmosphere and the moon turned blue.

Except February which has a shorter cycle two full moons in one month may occur in any month. And the last such occurrence was on August 31 2012. The next one is slotted for 2018.
