A blue moon is simply a second full moon in one calendar month. We last saw a full moon on July 2 and the second one on Friday night July 31. But for a truly blue-coloured moon to occur Nasa says there would need to be a volcanic eruption. As it did back in 1883 when people saw blue moons almost every night after the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa exploded with a force of a 100 megaton nuclear bomb. Plumes of ash rose to the very top of Earth's atmosphere and the moon turned blue. Except February which has a shorter cycle two full moons in one month may occur in any month.
