Young visitors throng Qatar Summer Festival

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) A large number of young visitors took part in unique entertainment activities on the first day of the Second Qatar Summer Festival yesterday.

Organised by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), the festival is expected to drive up visitor numbers with new attractions, special hotel rates, cultural events and special offers on top brands.

QTA expects the number of visitors to increase by 10 percent, especially from the GCC countries, compared to last year.

The first Qatar Summer Festival last year received 77,000 visitors in the first three weeks of the six-week event.

The highlight of this year's festival is Entertainment City, a one-stop for family entertainment at Doha Exhibition Centre.

It also has innovative activities for children, including skate boarding, rock climbing spaces, crafts, games and stage shows.

The hall is filled with rides, video games, play areas, a customised shopping area and a food court.

Daily stage shows will be held between 2pm and 9.30pm. Entry is free. The festival runs throughout the month.

Last year's event attracted about 1.12 million GCC visitors, some 40 percent of Qatar's worldwide total. Numbers are up in the first quarter of this year by 16 percent to more than 360,000.

The festival also features a full programme of shows to suit different age groups and tastes - from open-air public displays, theatre and classical concerts to comedy, film and popular Eastern and Western musical performances.

Qatar's hospitality and retail sectors are actively engaged in ensuring the success of month-long festivities.

Special accommodation offers are available at many of the country's top hotels for visitors.

These can be paired with competitive airfares on Qatar Airways' regional routes to ensure Doha ranks as the preferred summer destination for families from the Gulf.

The festival offers bargain prices on top brands in fashion, accessories, watches and jewellery, electronics and much more at participating outlets.
