21 feared dead in mudslide in NE India
(MENAFN- Arab News) GAUHATI India: Police on Saturday were searching for 21 people feared dead in a mudslide triggered by torrential monsoon rains in India's remote mountainous northeast region.
The mudslide occurred in Joumol a village in Manipur state close to India's border with Myanmar a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.
Police reinforcements reached the area and were trying to remove the rubble to find the missing people the officer said.
T.S. Warngam a vice president of the United Naga Council a civil society organization said that 20 villagers were feared to have been swept away by the landslide and that one villager was rescued.
The village is 160 km southwest of Imphal the Manipur state capital.
Landslides are common in India during the monsoon season which stretches from June through September.
