Axiom Mining strengthens board and management with key appointments

Axiom Mining (ASX:AVQ) has made a number of key appointments to strengthen commercial and technical capabilities as it continues its transition towards becoming a producer.

It has appointed Jeremy Gray as a non-executive director Juan Jeffery as executive general manager mining operations and Dr Phillip Tagini as its general manager sustainable development.

Earlier this week the company secured a $5 million private placement at $0.37 from institutional sophisticated and professional investors.

Funds will be allocated to the ongoing development of the Isabel Nickel Project in the Solomon Islands.

Gray has more than 20 years of experience in global resource capital markets as a mining equity analyst mining portfolio manager and investment banker.

He was previously the global head of basic materials at Standard Chartered Bank Plc head of metals and mining research at Morgan Stanley in London and the head of mining research at Credit Suisse in London.   

Gray is currently a director and managing partner of Chancery Asset Management.

Jeffery more than 30 years’ experience including a significant operational background in Papua New Guinea at mines such as Porgera and Ok Tedi as well as in senior management in BHP Billiton (ASX:BHP) and Rio Tinto’s (ASX:RIO) Comalco.

As a director at First Quantum Minerals Limited (TSE:FM) in Western Australia he commissioned the Ravensthorpe nickel mine open pit and delivered full run of mine product from the ground up with the beneficiation HPAL and AL plants and the off-take and bulk supply agreements at industry lowest cash cost of $4/lb nickel.

He is also a major projects and materials handling specialist and with substantial experience with clay ores and shipping.

Dr Tagini is a former Special Secretary to Prime Minister Gordon Lilo in the previous Solomon Islands Government primarily in charge of mining policy and legislative frameworks.

He is a barrister and solicitor in Solomon Islands and has handled briefs on a wide spectrum of issues including forestry mining fisheries maritime land and commercial and corporation law.

Dr Tagini has published and presented on the topic of mining sustainability to both international and domestic audiences.

His area of research and practice focuses on the fundamentals of people and land relationships and building corporate structures that reflect these relationships to build strong empowered communities that are sustainable after mine closure.


Isabel Nickel Project


Activities at the Isabel Nickel Project considered to be one of the largest nickel laterite deposits in the Pacific with a historic non-JORC Resource estimate of 159 million tonnes at 1.045% nickel and 0.07% cobalt are continuing with resource drilling and camp upgrade activities underway.

This work supports Axiom’s target of establishing a direct shipping ore operation by late 2015.

Recent orientation drilling confirmed the occurrence of high grade mineralisation such as 20.7 metres at 1.74% nickel from surface including 10.9 metres at 2.47% nickel.
