Taliban seize district, 80 villages in northern Afghanistan

(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Taliban fighters seized a district and at least 80 villages in northern Afghanistan Tuesday, dpa quoted officials.

In the northern province of Kunduz, 'scores of Taliban militants attacked Khan Abad district, fighting the local policemen, capturing about 80 villages,' said Mohammad Yousuf Ayoubi, chairman of the provincial council.

'At least 14 villagers fighting the militants were killed or injured,' he said, adding that 'hundreds of families are displaced, fleeing to other districts.'

The Taleban launched their current offensive in late April, vowing nationwide attacks in what is expected to be the deadliest summer in a decade.
