Saudi prisoners in Iraq not included in amnesty

(MENAFN- Arab News) DAMMAM: The fate of Saudi prisoners in Iraq hangs in the balance as most of them have been charged with terrorism and the amnesty law of that country does not cover terrorists or terror suspects.
Recently there was a ray of hope for more than 60 Saudi prisoners following an assurance by the Saudi Embassy in Jordan that the files of Saudi prisoners in Iraq may be closed as well as an assurance by the Iraqi authorities on reviewing the cases.
This hope diminished soon after the Saudi Embassy in Jordan revealed that the Iraq amnesty program doesn't include Saudis held in Iraqi prisons because they were charged with terrorism.
Sami Al-Saleh Saudi ambassador in Jordan told local media that the majority of Saudi prisoners are charged with terrorism and the amnesty law is still under discussion.
He confirmed that there was no tangible progress in the file of Saudi prisoners and detainees. 'There are hundreds of Saudi citizens in detention centers and prisoners about whom we haven't been told because they either don't want to be identified or because Iraqi authorities can't prove their identities' he said.
The ambassador rejected rumors claiming that the files of some Saudi prisoners in Iraq including Abdullah Al-Qahtani and Bader Al-Shammari have been referred to higher authorities to approve their death sentences.
Al-Saleh said that confidential information confirms that this hasn't happened (approval or execution).
