Ceasefire in Yemen must lead to dialogue

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) The Dubai-based English daily Khaleej Times in an editorial comment under the title 'Ceasefire in Yemen must lead to dialogue' said "Saudi Arabia's decision to broker another ceasefire in Yemen is a welcome move."

The daily further added that it will enable the international aid agencies to resume their work, as more than 80 per cent of the war-torn country's 25 million people are in dire straits.

"The dilapidated situation is not only due to the ongoing skirmishes between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis but mainly due to an economic blockade of one of the poorest countries in the Arab world," the daily noted.

As per the United Nations estimates, hundreds of children have died in the clashes and the intermittent bombardment has made life miserable for people who are left behind in the ruins. More than two million Yemenis have either left the country or living in a despicable state on the frontiers.

"This is why it is hoped that this ceasefire will help achieve the objective of cooling down the tense environment and provide succour to the needy," the daily said, adding, "This truce should be seen as an opportunity to kick-start the suspended diplomatic process, and let the war-weary country return to normalcy."

The comment concluded by saying "Tehran, which is clandestinely backing the Houthis, would be better advised to step back from the brink and let the political discord in the Arab country be handled on its own. Air strikes and indiscriminate bombardment of populated areas should immediately come to an end. This ceasefire should be different from the failed attempt earlier and must lead to a broad-based dialogue."
