Kuwait- Awqaf Gears Up To Battle Terror, Promote Moderation

(MENAFN- Arab Times) The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has finalized preparations for the implementation of a mechanism to promote moderation, combat terrorism and stop violence, reports Al-Rai daily quoting Minister of Justice, Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Yacoub Al-Sane.

Meanwhile, MP Dr Abdulrahman Al-Jiran has stressed the need to activate the role of the Kuwait University in educating the youths and protecting them from those spreading extremist thoughts. He urged the university to come up with a strategy to fight against extremism, as well as intellectual and behavioral deviations; otherwise, it will be accused of serving personal interests instead of performing national duties. Concerned government departments, particularly the General Customs Department, have been closely monitoring the entry and exit of goods belonging to local factories, reports Al- Anba daily quoting sources.

Sources said the General Customs Department have been strict in checking the movement of goods, especially after the recent terrorist attack. Sources affirmed the officers want to ensure that unlawful products or materials which could be used for terrorist attacks are not allowed into the country. Sources explained the procedures include review of important files concerning the industrial sector, tariffs for customs clearing and the import of chemicals for local production; such that each container from outside will cost KD 80.

Sources disclosed the new policy will put pressure on industries and reduce profits. Sources pointed out the customs almost dropped the idea of implementing tariffs and random sampling of imported chemicals in the recent past, but the latest security developments brought about the new mechanism. On the contrary, some companies urged the government to adopt the experience of other GCC countries where the industries do not pay tariffs on every container and it is limited only to licenses granted for import of chemicals. The companies also asked the government to find lasting and quick solutions to the Customs tariff issue to avoid price hikes.
