(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Ministry of Environment has imposed a temporary ban on fishing Kana'ad (a species of Kingfish) in Qatari waters for two months beginning August 15.
The first-of-its-kind ban in Qatar was announced through the ministerial decision 55/2015 to preserve the large migratory species during its breeding time.
The ban is implemented as part of the ministry's commitment to preserve the country's marine wealth and comply with the GCC Agricultural Committee's unified decision to ban fishing Kana'ad.
The temporary ban continues until October 15.
During the ban, fishermen will not be allowed to catch Kana'ad with nets, transport or trade it.
Sale of the encircled net called 'Halaaq', a special net to fish this species, will also be banned.
However, individuals and entities licensed to catch the fish for research will be allowed to do so during the ban.
A special group of inspectors has been tasked to monitor fishermen, with the support of Coast guards from August 15 to ensure there is no violation of the ban.
They will check fishermen's boats and nets.
Anyone found violating the ban will be arrested and produced before public prosecutor.
The inspectors have been given special training to identify possible violators.
Awareness will also be created among fishermen and boat owners about the ban to prevent them from fishing Kana'ad during the period.
