Azerbaijani and Armenian forces clash, 6 dead

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) An Azerbaijani soldier and five Armenian troops have been killed in clashes on Saturday, said Azerbaijani officials.
Armenian soldiers fired at Azerbaijan positions in Goranboy, Terter, Aghdam, Fuzuli, and Gadabay districts near the border, killing one Azerbaijani soldier, the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan said Saturday.

Azerbaijani forces fired back and killed at least five Armenian soldiers, the ministry said.

Clashes between the two started in 1988 with the invasion of the Azerbaijani territory of Nagorno-Karabakh by Armenia, and later evolved into a full-fledged war in 1992.

Since the end of the war in 1994, Armenian and Azeri delegations have held talks over the status of Nagorno-Karabakh under the supervision of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe's Minsk Group.

Resolving the conflict between the two countries remains a priority of the EU, European Council President Donald Tusk said Monday.

Although a cease-fire was signed in 1994, clashes regularly occur along the border.

Both sides have been claiming that the other engages in provocations at the border.
